IFWJ opposes check on poll surveys

IRUPATI: The two-day working committee meeting of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) began here on Tuesday to discuss a range of issues concerning the print and the electronic media.
The session is being hosted by the AP chapter of the IFWJ against the backdrop of the criticism about the role played by the media especially the television channels in giving a blow by blow coverage of the recent terrorist attack in Mumbai.
IFWJ President K. Vikram Rao, who presided, registered the Federation’s protest against the government’s move to restrict pre-poll and exit-poll surveys. Rao said the session would also lay focus on whether or not there should be a code of conduct for the media. In view of what he called a media explosion, he also underscored the need for a Media Commission to be set up by the government.
President of the State chapter S. Bala Bhaskar welcomed the delegates.
Among those who participated in the inaugural session were the Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidya Peetha, Prof. Harekrishna Satapathi, his counterpart in Sri Padmavathi Mahila University, Prof. G. Sarojamma, S. Vinay Kumar, Editor, Prajasakthi, Dr. G.S. Varadachari, senior journalist.
